At an all-hands meeting on Sept. 21, Fermilab Director Pier Oddone addressed a number of issues affecting laboratory personnel and retirees. Among those issues were the upcoming changes to Fermilab’s medical insurance costs and the non-performance based salary adjustment for all eligible employees.
Beginning on Jan. 1, 2012, the laboratory will increase the share of medical plan costs for our employees and retirees and will no longer offer the Blue Cross/Blue Shield HMO Illinois plan. We are making these changes to manage our benefits costs while ensuring that our plans are reasonably aligned with the programs offered by other national laboratories and the general employer market.
To offset the financial impact of this change to our medical plans, the laboratory is allocating each eligible employee a $1,000 non-performance based salary adjustment. This change will be reflected in employees’ October paychecks.
Fermilab’s Benefits Office will provide both our employees and retirees with more information prior to Annual Enrollment, which will take place beginning Monday, Nov. 7. An enrollment packet will include information about our benefit plans, the open enrollment process, and what you will need to do if you are currently a member of HMO Illinois. A series of informational meetings will also take place during the Annual Enrollment period.
