Payroll Manager

Name:            Ron
Job Title:       Payroll Manager
Department:  Finance – Accounting
Service:        14 years
Education:     Bachelor of Science – (Business) at Ferris State University (Michigan)

What are the best reasons to work at Fermilab?
The friendly attitude and being part of a world renowned institution.  The people here are helpful and nurturing to others.  I’ve met many people over the years and have enjoyed working and socializing with them.  I’ve also met people from all over the world.  I don't entirely understand the technical details of the scientific work, but I feel proud when I read the latest discoveries made at Fermilab.

What has been your most fun experience at Fermilab?
At a lab-wide party, I actually won a prize – dinner at Fermilab’s on-site gourmet restaurant (Chez Leon).  I even made it out to the dance floor during the party!

What do you like best about your job?
The employees, especially working with the non-U.S. Residents who come from all over the world.  It’s neat knowing that, while I may never be able to visit these countries in my lifetime, I've had the opportunity to meet with some of them and hear about their country and culture.

When you came to Fermilab, did you anticipate having the level of responsibility you currently have?
I had been in the Payroll environment for over 20-years prior to coming to Fermilab, many as Payroll Manager, so I had a good understanding of the level of responsibility.  I've had to expand my knowledge of U.S. and International tax regulations given the diverse workforce and various tax situations of our employees.

What do you see as the greatest opportunity at Fermilab?
I had the opportunity to work with many departments in bringing up the Peoplesoft HR/Payroll system.  My role included involvement from start to finish including testing to ensure all Payroll functions were in accordance with Fermilab policies and Federal/ State regulations.  It was a great sense of achievement with its successful implementation  I'm now working in a similar role on implementing an Oracle Time and Labor System.

What is the most important thing that keeps you working at Fermilab?
I'm very fortunate to have a dedicated Payroll staff who willingly do whatever it takes to do our job in a timely manner. We've never missed a pay or tax deadline. This camaraderie and teamwork in our department is vital to our success.  When you add the cooperation and support from our Programming, Management, Human Resources, Benefits, and employees, one can see why my job is so enjoyable.  It's hard to believe that I have been here almost 14-years.

Anything else to add?
At Fermilab, I have the opportunity to analyze situations, use my best judgment and easy access to management as the need arises.

I also enjoy the lab-wide social events, the Art Displays, and viewing the beautiful campus with its many wild animals.
