In order to have a successful first day of work, you should plan to bring the following items and information with you.
- --Before you can begin work at Fermilab, you must provide proper identification as proof that you are eligible to work in the United States. See the PDF file that describes proper forms of identification.
- --Fermilab requires employees to direct deposit their paychecks. You will need a voided check or deposit slip for each account in which you want to deposit your paycheck.
- --Plan the number of deductions that you will take on your Federal and Illinois income tax before you report to work on your first day. Consult an accountant if necessary.
- --You will need the name and social security number of all dependents in order to complete your medical and dental insurance forms.
- --You will need the name, address and birth date of all beneficiaries for your life insurance policy.
- --Bring the name, address and telephone numbers (day and evening) of two people to contact in case of an emergency.
- --You will be asked to provide make, model and license plate information for every vehicle you own that requires a Fermilab vehicle sticker.
- --It is best to bring your lunch or plan to eat in Fermilab's cafeteria on your first day of work. It is a busy day, and you will most likely not have time to go out to eat. You may preview the menu on the web.
Your first day at Fermilab will consist of a variety of orientation activities.
When you arrive on site, report directly to Human Resources orientation, which begins 8:30 a.m. every Monday morning on the 15th floor of Wilson Hall. In this session you will be given a brief overview of the work that is done at Fermilab, and you will complete all necessary paperwork to begin work at the laboratory.
After you complete the HR orientation, you must report to the Key and ID office (on the ground floor of Wilson Hall). Here you will obtain your Fermilab parking sticker and your gate pass(es). You will also have your picture taken for your official Fermilab ID card, which you will receive at the end of the day.
You should plan to have lunch between 12:00 and 1:00 p.m. If you have time between morning orientation activities and lunch, report to your work area. Do not worry if you don't have time; your supervisor understands that your first day is dedicated to orientation. Plan to bring your lunch or dine in the Fermilab's cafeteria since you will probably not have time to go out.
Report to New Employee ES&H Orientation at 1:00 p.m. During this session, you will learn about ergonomics, material safety data sheets (MSDS), Fermilab's lockout tagout procedures (LOTO) and personal protective equipment (PPE). You will also complete the required General Employee Radiation Training (GERT). At the end of this session you will receive your Fermilab ID card. If you would like to review the ES&H orientation materials after the training session, watch the streaming video.
