    Welcome to the Users Office


    Fermilab's Users Office is in Wilson Hall, on the first floor, west side. Our entrance is directly north of the elevator banks, next to the restrooms. Regular office hours on Monday, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays are 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, and Wednesdays 8:30 am to 2:30 pm.

  • Users and Visas


    Many of Fermilab's users are non-U.S. citizens holding a wide range of different U.S. immigration visa statuses. The Visa Office has information specifically for our B-1 and Visa Waiver users, as well as guidance on visa processing at U.S. Consulates.

  • Visitor ID Numbers


    Your Visitor ID number is the 5-digit number that identifies you at Fermilab. You will have the same Visitor ID number for as long as you are a User at Fermilab. If you ever become an employee, it will change.
    You need to have a Fermilab Visitor ID number before the Users Office can approve your site access (and issue you a Visitor ID Badge). You obtain a Visitor ID number when you request a Fermilab computer account for the first time.

    Users visiting Fermilab can learn about local Fermilab procedures in the newly revised Procedures for Researchers (formerly known as the Procedures for Experimenters), and about local resources in the recently revised Graduate Students' Association's Guide to Life.

Users Office

The Users Office is the first stop of most users on-site. We process requests for Fermilab ID badges for site access, and for Fermilab computing privileges. We also provide information about Lab procedures and policies, system, and local resources.

Our Office is in Wilson Hall, First Floor, West Side.

In our Office, we have maps for local areas, the Illinois Rules of the Road book (for driving), brochures and pamphlets from local businesses, visa information, travel information, and more.

  • Fraudulent Email Alert
  • Have you recently received an email announcing that you won the Diversity Lottery? Does the email ask you to pay fees or send money?  If so, the email is probably fraudulent. The government has issued warnings that a number of different scams relating to the U.S. Diversity Lottery are being conducted, and some Fermilab employees have received such emails. Further information about the frauds are at http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/types/types_1749.html and http://blog.uscis.gov/2011/03/e-mail-scam-avoid-green-card-lottery.html.  If you have received an email and are not sure as to whether it is real, please either forward it to visaoffice@fnal.gov, or bring a copy of the email by the Visa Office, and we can advise you.

  • The Unexpected Tax Obligations of Foreign Nationals Visiting the U.S.
  • The UEC will host a general information session for non-U.S. visitors and employees at Fermilab and Argonne, discussing tax filing and tax payments, entitled “The Unexpected Tax Obligations of Foreign Nationals Visiting the U.S.”  Presented by KPMG, it will be held at 12:30 pm, on Tuesday, Feb. 1st, in Fermilab’s Wilson Hall 1 West, and streamed live to Argonne National Lab.  People interested in attending are invited to complete a short survey at http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/WEB22BS862CGN4/ where you can provide information about concerns, and ask specific questions. Surveys must be completed by Friday, January 28, 2011 to be entered in the drawing.
